The Cnam has been leading since Jan. 2008 a European research program on developments in future radio systems. Thirteen universities, research centers and companies from nine countries are participating in the two-and-a-half-year PHYDYAS study on PHYsical layer for DYnamic AccesS and cognitive radio. The European Union has granted the projected €4 million PHYDYAS program with about €2.8 million from the 7th European Framework Program on Research, Technological Development and Demonstration.
The objective of PHYDYAS is to better manage the widely overloaded or poorly-used spectrum of frequencies available for radiocommunication, in order to improve spectrum usage (quality, high-rate...). It also aims to demonstrate the new technology by comparing its performances to the existing techniques, evaluating the achieved enhancements, and obtaining international standardization.
PHYDYAS focuses on electronics and studies the physical layer of communication networks, i.e. the most basic layer which transmits a signal from an emission point (source) over a communication media (radio, satellite, cable...) to a reception point. The objective of PHYDYAS is to propose a physical layer for future radio systems that is more efficient than the present OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) layer and better suited to the new concepts of DASM (Dynamic Access Spectrum Management) and cognitive radio. The expected impact of PHYDYAS is the migration of wireless systems to more efficient systems based on this new layer.
The consortium is made up of leading universities and research groups across Europe, associated to world leading companies in communication infrastructures, circuit design and instrumentation. The complementarity of all members makes them a powerful team dealing with all aspects of the subject.
The coordinating team at CNAM, headed by Professor Maurice Bellanger, Chair of Electronics, and Professor Michel Terré, comprises high ranking academics with extensive industrial background in the field of electronics. The multidisciplinary activities of the CNAM and its long-standing relationship with industry and economic sectors provide PHYDYAS with a particularly favorable environment.
